Genealogy Research: Its History

April 28th, 2010
My great-grandparents would marvel at how easily genealogy research can be done today with the click of a mouse! Information that used to take years of research to discover now is found so quickly.  In days gone by information was verbally passed down from generation to generation relying solely on memory. When keeping records through writing evolved,  myths were some of the first things recorded and stored on these written documents. Ancient ancestors believed they were children of gods and their family history was born out of a myth. The earliest genealogy research records are myths.
Genealogy Research and The Bible

One of the more famous bits of genealogy research perhaps is written in the Bible. “So and So begat So and So who lived to be 480 and begat so and so….”  The famous passages from Genesis and the Gospel are often referred to as “The Begats.”  The Bible is often looked at as the genealogy research record of Jesus.  Nearly all the Old Testament characters are somehow related to Jesus.
In wondering why our ancient ancestors bothered with keeping genealogies it more than likely was due to squabbles over inheritances  In the times when the King James Bible was comprised (1611) this would have especially been an issue of contention while countries were under divine right monarchies. In these times people who hoped to have a chance at all of property or a title needed to prove they were related to the recently deceased owner.

The 1900’s

My Aunt Ruth use to take me on genealogy research trips with her in the mid 1960’s.  In those days it was not possible to do any type of substantial genealogy research unless you traveled physically to the place that your ancestors had lived and died.  Their lives were traced through dusty, faded and quite often illegibly scribbled notes on yellowed, brittle pages in the halls of public records in the town that you thought your ancestors may have once lived in as you searched for any trace of them and their lives.
In the past two of the very best resources of genealogy research were cemeteries and family Bibles.  Our ancestors would record all the important family information in the blank pages of their family Bible and pass this book down through the generations.  Family Bibles are gems to genealogists as they were recorded by the very people they’re researching

The next best resource was a cemetery headstone.  It was common genealogy research practice o hold a piece of paper over the headstone and rub it with a pencil to more easily read the information and take it back home.

Disadvantage Of Getting Access To Free Marriage License Records

January 21st, 2012

In the lone star state, marriage accounts and divorce decrees are maintained by two outfits; the Bureau of Vital Statistics and the county court clerk’s office. The former operates under the administration of the Texas Department of State Health Services, while the latter falls under the county’s jurisdiction. In the state of Texas, every member of the general populace is allowed to gain access to Texas marriage records and other types of documents that are considered public knowledge. By applying for a formal request at any of the aforementioned offices, you can obtain such documents without restraints.

If one chooses to go with the Bureau of Vital Statistics office as a source of information, the Texas Department of State Health Services’ official website can provide the appropriate procedures and requirements that are necessary upon filing the request. Administrative and processing fees do apply. Additionally, the said website also offers other services aside from marriage documents; this includes access to birth and death reports, divorce decrees, as well as adoption accounts.

On the other side of the coin, older marriage records are available at the county court clerk’s office where the union originally took place. But with the state of Texas having 254 counties, locating a specific document can prove difficult without knowing which county the event happened. And if you take into account the significantly large population of the state, finding such files without any information or the right resources is next to impossible.

Marriage documents usually contain basic information regarding the couple in question. Among the details included are their complete names, the date of the event, and the location where the marriage took place. Aside from Texas marriage records, the requester may also apply for documents that can verify the existence of the marriage account. This can be done through the Texas Department of State Health Services as well. Moreover, the certified copy of the marriage license has to come from the county where it was originally issued.

An excellent alternative source for those wanting to gain access to public information is on hand as well. By utilizing commercial record providers, you can get the files you want without the bureaucracies associated with the conventional government sources. With the emergence of these online services, it only takes a simple online search to find commercial websites that offer access to a wide array of vital documents. People who frequently conduct this kind of research can appreciate the benefits that commercial record providers have to offer.

In comparison to the conventional means of gaining access to marriage records and other forms of public documents, good commercial record providers are capable of dishing out a far-reaching database that can cover data from every state in the country. Any events recorded prior to the said year are not available at this department. The county court clerk is responsible for the storage and maintenance of the actual copies of marriage certificates. Again, for the actual copy of the marriage license, you’re going to have to visit the court clerk’s office where the marriage was documented.

Visiting the Arkansas Department of Health’s official website will provide you with certain details that are relevant to the proper acquisition of vital records. The site lists the proper procedures that all applicants must observe, as well as the needed requirements that must be met before any processing commences. There is also a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) that might be able to help you in some way. But if you just want to gather information for your research and you do not want to have to go through such rigorous procedures, a better alternative might be available.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, a variety of data search websites are gaining prominence online. Among them are commercial record providers. For a small fee, these professionals can provide up-to-date and accurate marriage license records information through their wide-ranging database that not only deals with marriage records in Arkansas but in other states as well.
