Genealogy Research: Its History

April 28th, 2010
My great-grandparents would marvel at how easily genealogy research can be done today with the click of a mouse! Information that used to take years of research to discover now is found so quickly.  In days gone by information was verbally passed down from generation to generation relying solely on memory. When keeping records through writing evolved,  myths were some of the first things recorded and stored on these written documents. Ancient ancestors believed they were children of gods and their family history was born out of a myth. The earliest genealogy research records are myths.
Genealogy Research and The Bible

One of the more famous bits of genealogy research perhaps is written in the Bible. “So and So begat So and So who lived to be 480 and begat so and so….”  The famous passages from Genesis and the Gospel are often referred to as “The Begats.”  The Bible is often looked at as the genealogy research record of Jesus.  Nearly all the Old Testament characters are somehow related to Jesus.
In wondering why our ancient ancestors bothered with keeping genealogies it more than likely was due to squabbles over inheritances  In the times when the King James Bible was comprised (1611) this would have especially been an issue of contention while countries were under divine right monarchies. In these times people who hoped to have a chance at all of property or a title needed to prove they were related to the recently deceased owner.

The 1900’s

My Aunt Ruth use to take me on genealogy research trips with her in the mid 1960’s.  In those days it was not possible to do any type of substantial genealogy research unless you traveled physically to the place that your ancestors had lived and died.  Their lives were traced through dusty, faded and quite often illegibly scribbled notes on yellowed, brittle pages in the halls of public records in the town that you thought your ancestors may have once lived in as you searched for any trace of them and their lives.
In the past two of the very best resources of genealogy research were cemeteries and family Bibles.  Our ancestors would record all the important family information in the blank pages of their family Bible and pass this book down through the generations.  Family Bibles are gems to genealogists as they were recorded by the very people they’re researching

The next best resource was a cemetery headstone.  It was common genealogy research practice o hold a piece of paper over the headstone and rub it with a pencil to more easily read the information and take it back home.

Importance Of Obituary Searches For The Public

July 12th, 2010

A few months ago, after my mother died of cancer, I decided that I wanted to find out more information about some of my relatives. I knew that my mother had come from a big family, and that she had grown up in California. I wasn’t sure what kind of information I was looking for, but I eventually I decided to look at the California death records.

My mother had met my father and moved to Boston with him when she was seventeen. She didn’t talk much about the family she left behind, and the circumstances of her life in California were mysterious to me. But I did know that she had a brother and sister, which meant that I had an aunt and uncle I’d never met.

When my friend suggested doing obituary searches, I realized what a good idea it was. Not everyone’s name ever appears in a newspaper or any other kind of publication. But all people are born and all people die. Therefore, I figured that obituaries would have to lead me to a relative sooner or later.

I was absolutely right. It turned out that my mother’s father had died only a few months earlier than she had. His obituary was extensive, and I loved learning about the grandfather who had been a stranger to me.

Besides providing the person’s life story, obituaries often list the names of relatives who have survived them. That is how I came to know the names of many of my mother’s cousins, and found out that her brother and sister were still living in California!

I eventually tracked down contact information for them both, and traveled to meet them in California. After that, they came and visited my family in Boston. I am so glad that I decided to look at the California death records. That decision definitely made this process more efficient.

How To Link To Your Ancestors Using Connecticut Death Records

July 6th, 2010

2 obstacles to searching Connecticut death records are listed below. The title on reports may not describe its contents. Prepare for a long search if done manually.

Agencies in the town, state or in city governance maintain some data about deceased persons. The Nutmeg state has no areas called county areas. There is expectation that recordings of deaths overlap even without counties doing the measurements. Overlapping jurisdictions is the likely cause.

Book Name Can Hide Or Reveal

People who peruse data bases or record books cannot always infer its content just by reading the name written on a book. One book of record, for instance, is known as vital records. This book houses only two pieces of information on every person. Surely there must be more than two categories of essential information about residents of Connecticut.

An example is the label used for a section referred to as public records and state archives at the Connecticut state library. These resources at this very fine library are open to use. Within this collection people can find histories of tombstone inscriptions and notifications of deaths submitted to newspapers. Looking at the label does not give a clue that this extraordinary information is stored there. Researchers need to ask questions when they visit libraries. There is only so much room for descriptions that can go on signs and labels.

Wait Could Be Long

Placing data in various buildings is meant to accommodate more people. Some people like to visit a physical building. Other residents want to write and mail letters. Still others really enjoy sitting down in a room and leafing through books. Looking up records related to mortality can be done quickly and efficiently online. Before people can fill their car with gasoline they can initiate a search online.

Finding the correct building that houses the information might consume precious time. People often come first to a wrong building. Then government employees redirect enquirers to exact location. True locations too often requires more driving.

Proof Of The Passing Of A Person Can Remove Uncertainty

Hearing responsible officials confirm a passing means people can prepare for activities to come. Families of a soldier who is unaccounted for do not know whether to prepare for a homecoming or funeral. They would prefer proof whether their soldier is dead or alive. Proof of death can provide knowledge about family history with factual information.

Sometimes the departed has left a complex set of personal and financial affairs. Proof of passing away is needed to resolve these matters. People responsible for settling debts for deceased persons can unintentionally entangle themselves in the debts. A prolonged wait for written proof can make matters worse.

2 impediments while exploring Connecticut death records often hold back research. Remember that the contents of a file may not be clearly identified by its title. Searching by hand often takes the most time and effort.

Divorce Records For Public Usage

July 4th, 2010

Reportedly, there are more than 11 million people living in the state of Ohio which becomes the reason why the said state is listed as one of those that have the highest percentage in terms of divorce cases. With a ratio of 8 per 1000 of its over-all population, obtaining information on Ohio Divorce Records has become a problem too. However, despite such difficulty, many people are still searching for these files because of its importance in many ways. Probably, the most common reason why it’s most sought-after is to conduct a background check on a particular person for the protection of yourself, your family or your business. The same information can also be used in genealogical studies and legal proceedings.

Divorce records that are kept at the county clerk of the court’s offices are actually filed at the county level. The state of Ohio has maintained an index of divorce records that took place since the year 1949 as well as abstracts of those divorce cases that occurred from 1954 up to the present time. There are two important things that must be considered prior to conducting the search. First of all, it requires you to wait for 2 to 3 weeks for the request to be processed and secondly, your request won’t be accepted unless it’s done through mail.

How does an abstract of Divorce Records differ from a certified original copy? Naturally, if you have a copy of an abstract of a divorce record, that doesn’t mean that you already have the divorce decree because this one is not a divorce decree. Apart from that, it also cannot support any legal proceedings because its contained information is limited. On the other hand, a certified copy of a divorce record is its opposite. It contains complete details and is useful for any serious concerns.

It is the responsibility of the local, state, federal, or other agencies of the government to document or record everything that took place in a divorce case. Thus, if you would search for this information, you would definitely find out so many relevant details just like the date when the divorce was filed, the contact information of both parties, and the answer to why the couple got separated. Good enough, this information is not hidden from public’s view and use because it’s now easily obtained through your government office or through the Internet.

Back in the old times, you still have to address this concern to your local government office and follow several procedures with them. This time, that’s no longer the only thing that you can do because the Internet is now here to stay. It provides an easier method for searching these Free Divorce Records. Likewise, gathering of some important information such as the involved couple’s names, the exact location where the papers were filed, the couple’s current or previous address, and the date of divorce decree is also necessary to make the process faster and simpler.

There are two versions of service providers that you will find if you would choose to use the Internet in searching for these files on divorce records. You can opt to turn to those free sites or go with those that require a certain amount of fee for the service. Of course, your decision should be based on the reason why you wanted to gather this information. For a much better and most wanted type of service, it is recommended to go for the second option because it’s proven to satisfy all your needs. The guarantee of a full refund, protection from viruses and malwares, and a 24/7 technical support are some of the features that you should look for in that site that you will select.

Do-it-yourself State Of Ohio Divorce Records are tricky. Come and share our information on Divorce Status Online and see why.
